Grammar mistakes that quietly cost your website sales

Grammar mistakes that quietly cost your website sales

Visitors rarely say “I left because of a typo.” They just leave. Grammar and clarity problems work quietly: the page feels a little less professional, the offer a little less certain, and the sale goes to a competitor whose copy felt more careful.

The same errors show up again and again on business websites, and each one sends a buyer a signal.

Its and it’s make a company look careless

“Its a great time to upgrade” and “The team updated it’s process” are the kind of slips that spellcheck won’t catch, because both words are real. Readers notice anyway, especially on a homepage or pricing page where they are deciding whether to trust you with money.

The rule is simple. It’s always means “it is” or “it has.” Its shows possession. If you can replace the word with “it is” and the sentence still works, use the apostrophe. The same check settles your/you’re and their/they’re.

Dangling modifiers say something you didn’t mean

“Designed for busy professionals, our app saves hours.” Fine. But “Designed for busy professionals, hours are saved by our app” implies the hours were designed for professionals.

Here is a more damaging example: “After submitting the form, our team will call you within one business day.” The opening phrase has no clear actor, since it is the visitor who submits the form, not the team. Fix it by naming the subject: “After you submit the form, our team will call within one business day.”

Dangling modifiers also blur promises. When a guarantee or timeline is phrased loosely, customers read the most favorable version and are disappointed later.

Inconsistent capitalization makes pages feel pieced together

If one heading reads “Request a Quote,” the next reads “Request a quote” and the button says “REQUEST A QUOTE,” the site looks like it was written by several people who never spoke. Pick a style and apply it everywhere:

  • Sentence case or title case for headings, not both
  • One spelling for your product and service names, every time
  • Capitalize job titles and brand names consistently
  • Use the same form for lists, dates and phone numbers

A short style sheet of ten or twenty decisions prevents most of this. It is also a gift to anyone who edits the site after you.

Unclear calls to action leave visitors guessing

“Submit,” “Click here” and “Learn more” don’t say what happens next. Compare them with “Get my free estimate,” “See pricing” and “Book a 15-minute call.” A good button states the outcome and, when it can, lowers the perceived risk.

Surrounding sentences matter too. “Contact us today for more information regarding our offerings” is padded. “Tell us what you need and we will reply within a day” is specific, and it sets an expectation.

If a page exists to drive a single action, such as a campaign page, careful wording becomes even more important. Well-built landing pages that convert keep one clear goal, one clear button, and copy that doesn’t make people reread a sentence.

Walls of text get skimmed or skipped

Long, unbroken paragraphs are a readability error even when every sentence is grammatically perfect. Most visitors scan before they commit to reading. Help them:

  • Keep paragraphs to two or three sentences
  • Use subheadings that tell the reader what the section gives them
  • Turn lists of three or more parallel items into bullets
  • Lead with the point, then explain
  • Cut sentences that repeat the previous one

Short does not mean shallow. It means each sentence earns its place.

Clean copy helps search performance too

Search engines don’t penalize a stray comma. But clear, well-edited pages tend to earn more engagement, more links and more shares, which support rankings indirectly. Clean copy also helps people find you: if the phrase customers search for appears in your headings in its natural form, you are more likely to match their intent.

That is why many companies bring in SEO copywriting services rather than treating search optimization and editing as separate jobs. A writer who understands both the keyword and the reader can usually fix both problems in one pass.

Blog posts deserve the same standard as the homepage

Blogs and resource pages often get less editing than core pages, yet they are where many first visits begin. A post with sloppy grammar or a rambling structure introduces your brand badly. If you publish regularly and don’t have time to edit each piece, consider professional blog writing support, or at least a second reader before anything goes live.

A five-minute proofreading routine catches most of it

You don’t need a full editorial team to catch most of this.

  1. Read the page aloud. Awkward phrasing is easier to hear than see.
  2. Search the document for its, it’s, your, you’re, their and there, and check each one.
  3. Compare every heading and button for capitalization and wording.
  4. Read only the headings and buttons. Do they tell the story on their own?
  5. Have someone unfamiliar with the business read the page and tell you what they would do next.

Do this before every launch and after every major edit. It costs almost nothing, and it protects the trust your design, ads and reviews worked hard to build.
